A brand-new roof, installed at no cost to the family living beneath it. That is the heart of Roofs for the Troops, and it is one of the projects we at Salty Dogs Roofing are proudest to be part of. Every year, deserving military families and veterans face the same aging shingles, storm damage, and leaks as everyone else, but the cost of a full replacement can stand in the way of protecting the home they fought to keep. This program exists to remove that barrier.
How the Roofs for the Troops Program Works
Roofs for the Troops is a national initiative from GAF that partners with certified contractors to donate roofing systems to members of the military community. As a GAF Master Elite contractor, Salty Dogs Roofing is qualified to participate, which means we contribute the labor and coordination while GAF contributes materials toward a complete roof for a selected recipient. The result is a fully installed, warranty-backed roofing system for a family who has earned it through their service.
The selection process typically focuses on active-duty personnel, veterans, and Gold Star families whose homes are in genuine need of a new roof. Applications are reviewed for both the condition of the existing roof and the circumstances of the household. Once a recipient is chosen, we treat the project with the same care and technical rigor we bring to every job, because a donated roof is only meaningful if it is built to last for decades.
What Goes Into a Donated Roof Installation
A Roofs for the Troops installation is not a stripped-down version of our regular work. We install the same premium, FORTIFIED-eligible systems, using the same certified methods that our GAF Master Elite and FORTIFIED credentials require. That includes proper tear-off, deck inspection, synthetic underlayment, ice and water shield in vulnerable areas, and precise flashing details around chimneys, valleys, and penetrations.
Because our region sits in the path of coastal weather, wind uplift resistance and water intrusion protection matter enormously. Our dedicated crews follow manufacturer specifications to the letter, from nailing patterns to ventilation balance, so the finished roof performs the way GAF’s strongest warranties demand. A recipient family receives not just shingles, but an engineered system designed to stand up to the storms that roll through Bolivia, Winnabow, Boiling Spring Lakes, NC, and surrounding areas.
Why This Program Matters to Us
Our slogan is “Woofs Done Right,” and few projects capture that spirit better than giving a well-built roof to someone who has served. Salty Dogs Roofing was built on local roots, and the military community is woven into the fabric of the towns we serve across Bolivia, Winnabow, Boiling Spring Lakes, Supply, & St. James, NC. Honoring that community with tangible, lasting work is simply part of who we are.
We also believe our values should show up most clearly when there is no invoice attached. The same quality and integrity that guide our paid work guide our donated work, and every recipient is treated as a full client from the first inspection to the final cleanup.
Here is what a Roofs for the Troops recipient can expect when working with us:
- A dedicated Project Manager: one point of contact who keeps the family informed at every stage, exactly as we do for paying customers.
- A dedicated crew: experienced installers who bring over 100 years of combined experience to the roof.
- Bilingual communication: so language is never a barrier to understanding the scope, schedule, or care of the project.
- Full protection: we are insured, bonded, and licensed, so the family carries no liability during the work.
- A spotless finish: we leave the property in better condition than we found it, magnetic-sweeping for nails and hauling away all debris.
Nominating a Deserving Family
If you know an active-duty service member, veteran, or Gold Star family in our area whose home needs a new roof, we encourage you to reach out. Nominations from neighbors, family members, and community organizations are often how the most deserving candidates come to our attention. We are glad to explain eligibility, walk through the application details, and schedule an inspection to document the condition of an existing roof.
Even outside of the donation program, we extend the same customer-first approach to every military family we serve. That includes our 24/7 emergency service for storm damage, our practice of never accepting full payment until a job is completed and cleaned up, and the FORTIFIED-certified expertise that helps homes qualify for stronger protection and potential insurance advantages.
Roofs for the Troops reflects everything Salty Dogs Roofing stands for. When a family that has given so much finally looks up at a roof they no longer have to worry about, that is a job done right in every sense that counts.
